The independent, bohemian atmosphere and laid back surf style that defines Venice Beach is exuberantly embraced by Hotel Erwin, the only true boutique hotel in this iconic, L.A. neighborhood.
Not only does its location keep it cool—overlooking the wide beach and pacific waves, while kissing the vibrant boardwalk—but every detail, from the smile of its staff to the art on the walls, reminds Erwin guests what brought them to this particular stretch of California coast.
Recently renovated, the plush rooms open onto private balconies (most of which offer views of the pacific) and provide all the modern comforts you’d expect from a boutique property, with SoCal personality. A true admirer of its own origins, Hotel Erwin never misses an opportunity to revel in the artistry that gives its location life. Art decking the hallways and room interiors echoes the street art just beyond those very same walls. Photographs document the myriad of famous faces—musicians, artists, surfers—who’ve all called Venice home.
If it seems a labor of love, it most certainly is. After the first round of extensive renovations in 2009, the hotel was renamed The Erwin after its owner, Erwin Sokol, who is a long time Venice resident and a local character in his own rite. Over the years, so much of the hotel’s evolution has directly involved the community that he admires so well.
And the admiration is mutual. Ask any local about the Erwin and their faces light up, whether its to talk about the history of the iconic building, or the new icon its brought to Venice: High Rooftop, its ultra cool open air lounge. Even if some folks don’t know the Erwin Hotel by name, they certainly know the bar on its roof.
From far down the beach in either direction, as dusk rolls in you can see the fire lamps beckoning sunset worshippers, promising delicious mojitos, sumptuous small plates and getting cozy under blankets. It’s the perfect finish to a perfect Venice Beach day that, for its lucky guests, both begins and ends at Hotel Erwin.
