I ate an amazing steak the other day and I wanna tell you about it. No, it wasn’t at Gallaghers or Peter Lugers. It was at TGA NYC, a restaurant, sports bar, and lounge located in Hell’s Kitchen over on West 36th Street, right beside the new Crowne Plaza HY36 Midtown Manhattan.
You might think as I initially did, that a restaurant connected to a hotel might not be the place to go for a night out on the town, but I thought wrong. TGA NYC is really stunning inside. Their space is large with high ceilings and some really nice decor. I especially like the pop art and graffiti that’s in their Back Alley Beer Garden. In the summer the beer garden has a retractable glass roof, making it a perfect spot to grab a drink after work.
Chef Israel Calderon is the man who runs the kitchen. He’s a Certified Executive Chef and Certified Culinary Administrator with the American Culinary Federation. With over 20 years experience as both executive sous chef and executive chef at renowned 5 Diamond hotels like Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun, Mundo Imperial in Acapulco, Chicago Hilton & Towers, and others, your taste buds will be in good hands.
He also created of one of the most tantalizing Latino restaurants in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Café Calderon, and was even invited to the White House by President Barrack Obama for the launch of the Chefs Move to School Program.
Getting back to my meal, my girlfriend and I started out with the Grilled Shishito Peppers and the Tuna Tartare made with avocado, green onions, and sesame seeds in a citric glaze, both recommended to us by our friendly server, Justin. Both were great, but the Tuna Tartare was truly excellent. The avocado and citric glaze gave it a delicious flavor. We also tried the Hawaiian Black Salt Shrimp with spicy garlic sauce and pineapple relish – yum!
We decided on steaks for our main course and ordered the Beef Tenderloin with a smoked salt rub and tomato chimichurri with sautéed garlic potatoes and grilled asparagus, and the Hanger Steak grilled in a mushroom red wine sauce with roasted rosemary potatoes and vegetables. So many times I’ve been disappointed when ordering steak at a non-steakhouse restaurant (sometimes even at a steakhouse), but not at this place. The Tenderloin was fabulous and completely blew away my expectations. Cooked medium-rare, more on the rare side, exactly as I’d asked our waiter Justin, it was pink and juicy and flavorful – my mouth is watering as I write this.
My girlfriend’s Hanger Steak was just as good. Cooked to perfection, the mushroom red wine sauce added a terrific zest to it. The quality of our steaks was that of a high-end steakhouse. Absolutely delicious!
No meal is complete without some sweets, so we ordered their cheesecake and molten chocolate cake with ice cream on top, and an Irish Coffee to finish off the evening. We were very impressed with our food, and the service was lovely too. Definitely ask for Justin to be your waiter.
On weekends they have a $35 2-hour unlimited special of Mimosa, Bellini and Bloody Mary. It ends at 5:00 PM, so you need to start your drink fiesta no later than 3:00 PM.
