What did you want to be when you grew up? A producer for movies and television, like Heather Parry? In a band like the Beatles? Being in the entertainment business is the dream for so many people, not only kids, and for good reason. Fame! Money! Worldwide renown! That’s all well and good, but there are equally good reasons to be thankful you’re not in the business. It’s an exciting life, but it comes at a cost.

Your Privacy is Gone

There have always been cameras shoved in the faces of famous people (poor Princess Diana ended up paying the ultimate price), but since everyone today carries a camera in their pocket, it’s harder than ever to escape the flashing bulbs. No matter where you go or what you eat, assume that someone is photographing you. Not only that, but fans can get grabby and forget that you might have personal boundaries. You will never be left alone again.

Body Image Does Matter

America is getting better about positive body image, but the reality is that it’s not a balanced spectrum yet. Celebrities are expected to be fit and trim at all times, and the tabloids will notice if they put on even a small amount of weight. People are ruthlessly mean online about body shaming, so you must have thick skin and be prepared to eat a lot of salad.

Your Time Isn’t Yours Anymore

If you want fame, you have to put in the time and effort to achieve it. Be prepared for long days and long nights of recording, reshooting, interviews and so much more. If you’re in the middle of a project, you are a slave to your contract and are at someone else’s beck and call. Don’t expect long, restful nights of sleep or regular eight-hour days with weekends off. This job is not your average nine-to-fiver.

Think About the Children

People have a fascination with all aspects of celebrities’ lives, and that includes their families. Children of famous people show up on magazine covers, internet chat boards and social media pages. How comfortable would you be with pictures of your family vacations plastered all over the place? How would your partner feel?

Today’s digital world is obsessed with fame and everybody wants their moment of it. The entertainment business is a fast-paced, exciting life that comes with so many perks, but there are challenges and sacrifices to consider too.
