Amylos Taverna is a welcome addition to a sea of traditional restaurants and staple go-to destinations in Astoria. The bright and inviting interior and extensive menu, cocktail and wine list, are perfect for a date night, entertaining family and for dinner and drinks with friends.
We had to start with a cocktail and Amylos has so many! We opted for the Antidote and The Dirty Greek. The Antidote, comprised of Tito’s Vodka, pomegranate and cardamom-Greek Mountain tea syrup, was a refreshing beverage for a hot summer day. The Dirty Greek, Amylos’ take on a dirty martini, actually ended up being purple-y and looked like a cosmo, but was a salty treat with the feta cheese-stuffed Kalamata olives.
We then moved on to appetizers and the Sushi Grade Octopus and Watermelon Salad, that looked more like a sculpture than food! The octopus was cooked perfectly and the beet puree was a perfect combination with the dish. The small details on the watermelon salad like the basil foam were also great additions.
For mains, we tried the Scallops, with more beat puree and avocado mousse, the recommended Dark Ale Lamb Shank, and Moussaka, a traditional Greek dish made with eggplant instead of noodles. The lamb shank fell right off the bone and both that and the Moussaka were hearty and filling dishes.
We were very full, but decided to end on a sweet note and our server steered us in the right direction. The Yogurt Panna Cotta was delicious and exactly what we wanted to end our meal. The interesting thick and rich flavor of the greek yogurt in the dish was light and refreshing and everything we wanted.
Amylos has proven to be a solid choice for any occasion or clientele. We’ll definitely be back to try more of the vast menu!
