The majority of the human population now lives in cities, and the global population is rapidly increasing. Heat recovery ventilation is a great way to save on heating or air conditioning by using ambient air to temper or cool down air coming from the outside. It does so by passing both air flows through an exchanger. This way, the air that is being brought inside the house is either being cooled or heated by the air being expelled.

For these systems to be efficient, homes have to be tightly sealed and insulated. They are also usually a better fit for new homes that were made with airtightness in mind.

Sensor Technology

Sensor technology can also be used to monitor and regulate energy usage. Occupancy sensors are already being used to regulate HVAC or heating use, and artificial lighting as well. Traffic Energy

A lot of energy is being wasted in cities around the world. But what if you could use the kinetic energy generated by vehicles to power them? 

Well, this is exactly what the Travel Energy Bar System is trying to do. The system, which has been rolled out in Puerto Rico, reuses the energy generated by traffic.  Bars are installed in areas where traffic bottles up and carefully placed so that vehicles apply pressure on them when rolling over. This creates movement that is used to power up equipment around the city.

Smart Home Devices

Smart home devices allow anyone to have better control over their daily consumptions and habits. You can use your mobile device to control certain appliances, program them according to the time of the day, or simply close something you forgot about. 

Artificial intelligence could also transform how these devices are used. There are already AI applications that can modify your energy settings by learning your routine.
