On Saturday, July 28, The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce will kick off its 45th annual HARLEM WEEK in celebration of Harlem’s rich cultural, political, and economic heritage. This celebration – Sunday, July 28th and run through Saturday, August 31s – will celebrate its 45th anniversary and pay homage to Harlem’s influence across the world through its through its 2019 theme “Our Local History Creates A Global Impact”.
Attracting over two million attendees from all over world each year, HARLEM WEEK offers over 100 free and low-cost events at renowned venues across Harlem and beyond. From July 28 through August 24, attendees can enjoy cultural events ranging from culinary, health and wellness, technology, arts, entertainment and more celebrating 45 years of HARLEM WEEK and Harlem’s rich history and influence across the world.
Festival highlights include:
-A Great Day in Harlem – HARLEM WEEK kicks off with a full day of family-friendly activities, including performances by world-renowned musicians and performers, hundreds of vendors exhibiting food, arts and crafts, and more.
-Youth S.T.E.A.M. Hackathon – Science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics conference for teenagers.
-New York City Economic Development Day – HARLEM WEEK’s Economic Development Day features a full day of conferences focused on the business and economic development of the Harlem community. The day’s conference will include presentations by developers with new projects in Upper Manhattan and across New York, as well as presentations by businesses providing and promoting regional and international business opportunities for women, local and minority owned businesses and more.
-Summer in the City – A full day of family-friendly activities, including performances by world-renowned musicians and performers, fashion shows, hundreds of vendors exhibiting food, arts and crafts, and more. Summer in the City also kicks off the first day of HARLEM WEEK’s two-day NYC Children’s Festival.
-HARLEM DAY – HARLEM DAY is the biggest event of the four-week HARLEM WEEK celebration. The event attracts over 100,000 attendees annually to 135th Street for a full day of entertainment including performances on 5th Avenue in Harlem, a Children’s Festival at the YMCA on St. Nicholas Avenue, and more. Additional highlights include the Upper Manhattan Auto Show which showcases classic and new vehicles, the NYC Health Village which provides free exams and health screening; fashion show, business expos, games and rides for children as well as hundreds of vendors and exhibitors selling an array of arts, crafts, clothing, food, and more.
-Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Health Run & Walk ¬- Sponsored by The New York Road Runners and partnership with The Greater Harlem of Commerce, the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K Run and Family Walk is one of NYC’s most popular running events. The event comprises three elements throughout the day, including a Family Health Walk a Children’s Run which includes a series of sporting events and speed runs, and the main run/walk event, which is then followed by a community celebration featuring performances and DJ sets by saluting our musical icons.
This year’s HARLEM WEEK festivities will include events at Marcus Garvey Park, U.S. Grant National Memorial Park, The Apollo Theater, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, Columbia University, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Harlem School of the Arts, Dance Theater of Harlem and more.
