We must tip our hats to the Obscura Society of New York City, the local cavorting chapter of Atlas Obscura: they sure know how to throw a memorable party. Though it was already a couple of weeks ago, our minds are still reeling from the fun (and though we had many of them, after two weeks we can safely say not from their delightful Hendricks cocktails that flowed copiously all night).
Leave it to their twinkling eyes to take an endeavor that might otherwise be deemed “nerdy” and make it undeniably cool.
Arriving to the gorgeously iconic lair of The John Mossman Lock Collection of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen, guests were given keys to wear around their necks, though a select few were given locks to which some mysterious partygoer had the key.
And thus, a flirtatious wink and the electricity of possibilities, set the stage for antiquated pursuits of vintage lock picking, testing one’s key against a stranger’s lock, perusing the impressive collection of vaults and locks, and cocktail sipping–all set to the vivacious tunes of Jason Prover and the Sneak Thievery Orchestra.
Internationally renowned lock picker, Schuyler Towne, was in festive form throughout the night, demonstrating his impressive skill set, guiding the crowd in utilizing their newly acquired personal lock picking kits (what a party favor!) and sharing his tricks of the trade.
Let these incredible shots by skilled photographer, Steven Acres, unlock the event for you to behold. And be sure not to miss any of Obscura Society NYC’s upcoming events.
