November 18: Just in time for the holidays approaching, Obivia kicked off the season of overindulgences with an event at their quaint Soho bar on Lafayette and Spring. Typically dimly lit for a mysterious ambiance, the mood was slightly brighter with a scantily clad Mrs. Claus with adorable candy cane knee-high socks passing out sample cocktails. Their wintery concoctions left your tastebuds with a sense of nostalgia: the ginger-pear martini had a strong kick, and the butterscotch apple cider and frozen hot chocolate can bring out the alcoholic in any child. A Macallen tasting station was set up in the front of the bar for samples of their 12- and 15-year aged scotches. The knowledgeable Macallen connoisseur talked about the subtle differences in taste between the two, but all I could taste was the burning sensation that coated my esophagus. Already feeling tingly, I ordered mini burgers from Obivia’s great happy hour menu that perfectly hit the spot. DJ Frenchie spun music in the smaller back room, perfect for intimate private events.
I helped host my friend’s birthday party here at Obivia over 2 years ago, and though we didn’t have the deep pockets of a corporate account, the manager was still very accommodating. They gave us a taste of their acclaimed sangria brimming with fruit (special prices on pitchers during happy hour!), and they played soft-core porn on their flatscreens. Though they did not show porn at this event, I’m sure they would be more than happy to provide it for you if you put in a special request during your own private party.
