April 21st:  Far from becoming a sommelier, I made my way to City Winery to educate myself on the wines of Portugal.  At the Vini Portugal annual trade tasting, there were a great number of people enjoying and “discovering the diversity” of Portuguese wine.

Unfortunately, I didn’t learn very much because the Portuguese have different, crazy names of grapes that are particular to their climate.  I even stalked another guest who stuck his nose in his glass and swirled like a true professional, but his mutterings were too quiet for me to hear  Fortunately, I was still able to enjoy a variety of delicious wines from a few vendors.

A charming Antonio Silverio of Quinta do Carneiro didn’t speak much English, but he understood me enough to suggest his favorite wine and invite me to visit his winery just outside of Lisbon.  I asked when would be the best time to visit, and he suggested anytime in the summer from June through August.  I’m making vacation plans stat, so if anyone wants to come with then let me know!
