April 23rd: Who would’ve thought that the most fantastic party of the season would be in Hoboken?  For serious – you skeptics and Manhattan snobs, the W Hotel opening of the Hoboken location could not have been any more glamorous!

Despite getting stuck on the PATH for a good 15 minutes, we arrived at the W in one piece.  A gorgeous building designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects right on the water with a spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline, there were a gaggle of people excitedly waiting to go inside.

Upon entering, we were greeted by smiling hosts and hostesses, and in the lobby there was a grand piano topped with a lounge singer performing.  We then walked into the first open area with a bar that had a gigantic revolving W Hotel martini glass with a girl lounging around seductively inside.  DJ Cassidy (Mo’s favorite!) was spinning great music on the main floor all night.

Sponsored by Ciroc and Don Julio, the open bar served creative W Hotel signature cocktails.  I tried out the “W Swagger” with Don Julio, Grand Marnier, and lychee – slightly sweet for my liking, but balanced it out with the passed hor d’oeuvres:  Delicately prepared trays of sliders, cheeseburger wedges, tuna tartare, dumplings, crabcakes, chicken skewers, lamb lollipops with dill and yogurt, seasoned french fries, and so much more!  The kitchen must have been cranking out the food like a machine and the staff was rushing around, but there was plenty to go around.  We hung around in the Tuscan steakhouse Zylo connected to the hotel lobby where the cater waiters knew to come to us first before getting lost in the crowd.

Sufficiently full, we decided to explore the rest of the hotel and moseyed to the second floor.  Between the first and second floor there was a balcony that took you to a beautiful view outside.  They had podiums affixed with Swarovski studded binoculars where you could take a closer look at Manhattan and spy into neighboring apartments if you wanted to.

At around 9:30 pm, the visionary partners of the hotel came out and graciously thanked all the guests and their supporters, and then announced the fireworks that were going to take place right outside over the Hudson River.  We rushed outside into the cold, and soon the fireworks began, starting off with brightly colored Ws (or Ms and 3s) and ending with a great blazing finale.

It was too chilly to stay outside for very long, so we headed up to the ballroom.  The W’s “Signature Wonder Wheel” was surrounded by a mob of people waiting their turn to take a spin at the wheel to win prizes.  We were hoping that the grand prize of landing on the big sparkly W meant that we would win a free stay at the hotel, but it just meant that the winner won all the toy prizes offered so we happily settled with the purple Etch-a-Sketch.

Right after our turn at the wheel, we looked towards the front of the ballroom where Jamie Foxx started his performance!  Everyone was dancing and having a great time, and exploded when he performed his hit “Gold Digger.”

The hotel obviously has great ammenities, including a state-of-the-art fitness center, Bliss Spa, a variety of high-end restaurants and shopping centers; their Whatever/Whenever service vows to get you whatever you want, whenever you want it – from box seats to sporting games, show tickets, helicopter pick-up.  Just keep it legal, kids.

Other noteworthy attendees included Shannen Doherty; members of Rescue Me’s cast, Callie Thorne, Mike Lombardi, and Daniel Sunjata; Aubrey O’Day; Carson Kressley; Jonathan Adler; Joe Pantoliano and Robert Iler of The Sopranos; Michael Strahan and David Diehl of the NY Giants; Kerry Rhodes and Darrelle Revis of the NY Jets; Donnie Klang of Making the Band; and Pepa of Salt & Pepa, among many more!
