Indulging my ears with some music, Thursday night I made my way to the Night Hotel to enjoy Marcus Goldhaber and the Jon Davis Trio’s weekly performance. Accompanied by a drummer, bassist and pianist, the audience enjoyed the enchanting voice of Goldhaber’s jazzy tunes.
A thoroughly enjoyable feat of live jazz in the classy, cozy lounge in the back of the first floor bar, it is an intimate setting where you can get chummy with the studly singer and the band between sets. I chose to befriend the bartender, Darko, and tested out the bar’s highly recommended sparkling white grape cosmo. Darko then followed up with two more tasty and colorful shots for me, and correctly guessed that I was a Virgo. What an uncanny skill to have!
Though a small lounge, I thoroughly enjoyed the intimate space which made every seat VIP for being so close to the action. The only reason to move to a bigger lounge would be to upgrade the pianist from a dinky keyboard to a grand piano.
I picked up two of Goldhaber’s CDs: The Moment After, covers of various jazz artists, and Take Me Anywhere with the Jon Davis Trio, a mix of more covers as well as original compositions. People Magazine has heralded Goldhaber, saying that he “puts a heartfelt, sometimes heartbreaking spin on such standards as ‘Like Someone in Love’ and ‘Honeysuckle Rose,’ finding the soul in each note with his no-frills approach.”
Come check it out for yourself every Thursday night. With only a $10 cover, pick from one of the two sets at either 6:30 or 8:00 while enjoying delicious cocktails. For a sneak peek, hit his website.
