This weekend had great weather to spend outdoors at Long Island City’s Water Taxi Beach! Yelp, the renowned user review site, held a fun beach party where guests got a chance to relax in the sand. It’s almost like we were on a tropical island vacation!
Not so much, but it was a fantastic way to spend the afternoon. There was plently of food at the free BBQ with burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork, and chicken legs, and drinks galore! There were tons of alcohol sponsors, including Southern Comfort, Tommy Bahama Rum, Tanteo Tequila, Pitu Cachaca, VeeV Acaí Liquer, Leblon Cachaca, Herradura Tequila, and Beija Cachaca. Rum punches, caipirinhas, margaritas, and all sorts of summer cocktails were being stirred up! For those who just needed to quench their thirst from the summer heat, there was plenty of Honest Tea to go around.
For this event, Yelp partnered with the New York City Coalition Against Hunger which represents the more than 1,200 nonprofit soup kitchens and food pantries in New York City and the more than 1.3 million low-income New Yorkers who are forced to use them. The Coalition works to meet the immediate food needs of low-income New Yorkers and enact innovative solutions to help them move “beyond the soup kitchen” to self-sufficiency. A party for a great cause makes it even more worthwhile!
Next to the East River on the Queens side, we had a great view of the Manattan skyline. The festivities started at 5:00 pm, when it was still scorching hot and the most people arrived. We were concerned that there would be too many people, since Yelp events are always popular, but I guess people were dauted by the trek out to the boroughs. By around 6:30 or so it finally cooled down and we were sweating less and danced with the girls giving out mardi gras-esque beaded necklaces from SoCo.
It’s definitely recommended to go check out one of the Water Taxi Beaches for a sandy getaway, so be sure to hit one up before the end of the summer!
