Urban Girl Squad joined forces with Flatiron Kitchen catering and IS Wine to produce the event ,“Throw a Cocktail Party Like a Pro: Hostessing Workshop” on Wednesday, January 13th in the Broadway Party Rental Showroom in Soho.

Upon entry, I was greeted by Urban Girl Squad founder, Amanda Hofman and the wonderful aroma of hors d’ourves in the oven.  For the first part of the evening, guests were given the opportunity to mingle and enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres (a few, which we would later learn how to make from scratch in a cooking demo).

We were introduced to Jordan Gaspar (President) and Danika Charity (Executive Chef), co-founders of Flatiron Kitchen and gracious hosts for the evening.  Jordan’s passion for entertaining in her own home led to the creation of Flatiron Kitchen, which provides catering for special events and cooking parties as well as helpful tips and tricks for hostesses wishing to pull off a successful event.

Jordan had some great ideas including how to avoid some common mistakes, (you wouldn’t believe how many people forget to buy ice), how to add a special touch to a serving platter, create a signature cocktail and when to consider renting supplies and hiring help for your event.

Danika led a cooking demonstration, preparing mango chicken salad in wonton cups and tuna tartare served in an Asian soup spoon.  Each hors d’oeuvre was presented on a unique serving tray with an accent piece- a banana leaf or atop a plate of green split peas, providing a simple yet delightful contrast.

The evening concluded with dessert; southern pecan chocolate chip bread pudding bites with bourbon crème anglaise and guests walked away with a gift bag including another sweet treat from Flatiron Kitchen and discounts to local wine and food shops to kick-start the cocktail party planning process.
