Okay, we all have heard that there is no such thing as a free lunch. But it is possible to acquire outfits for a plethora of lunches at a very nominal cost. In other words, now hear this: Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a clothes swap event which enables you to acquire new clothes, clean out your closet, and help the environment. What’s not to like?
I attended the latest incarnation of this event at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe dressed in the clothes swap version of the cliched great white hunter in Africa sporting pith helmet and gun and compass. With a giant backpack over my shoulder, I attacked the mounds of clothes piled on tables which looked like so many hippoes hanging out in their watering hole. The task at hand was nothing short of a hunt–sans harm to any animals. Modesty aside, I am a superb clothes swap hunter. I found a perfect vintage dress to die for.
Unfortunately, even if I died from not eating ever again, I could never hope to fit into it. So, I handed it over to a woman who is thinner than I was when I was born. She was ecstatic.
The point is that events such as this generate community as well as new clothing acquisitions. Many of my swap friends attended this event. Chit-chat and clothes galore; who could ask for anything more?
I found a great full-length jeans coat–ie a garment that resembles a jeans jacket on steroids. The clothes that I donated to the swap ensure that I now have room for this giant coat in my closet. And, I can even fit into it. Hurray!
Hurray for swaps in general and Swap-O-Rama-Rama in particular. I can’t wait for the next one. Hope to see you there.
