Stepping into the Sweetheart Soiree at the landmark Bogardus Mansion in Tribeca, I couldn’t help but feel transported to a different era – circa 1920s. Perhaps the partial sponsorship by Bootlegger 21 NY Vodka should have tipped me off, but I felt woefully out of place not being in my flapper garb. It seemed all the attendees had the tacit knowledge it was a costumed event, although my assumption of a Valentine’s theme was only off in that the crowd was straight out of a Boardwalk Empire outtake.

The romantic tone of the evening was set by Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra. It seemed the crowd learned well from Roddy Caravella’s complimentary dance lessons since the floor was dominated by couples who actually knew how to foxtrot and swing!

Chanteuse Tamar Korn upped the romantic ante with her ode to classic American hits before 20s tap dancing sensation Gin Minksy did her entertaining interpretive performance of Little Red Riding Hood. The temperature then soared as a fittingly 20s inspired burlesque dancer put on a tease show that really turned up the heat.

About 150 guests at the intimate soiree enjoyed complimentary hors d’oeuvres and sweets between dances, ending the night under the moon – that is, the moon set for a romantic photo-op. If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate Valentine’s Day next year this might just be what you are looking for. Plan on pre-gaming or bringing plenty of cash to buy drink tickets, although considering there is only one restroom facility it may not the best idea to imbibe throughout the evening.

Happy Romancing,

Jenicka
