While models were dieting, starving, and furiously exercising the days leading up to Fashion Week, we were doing nothing of the sort. To get over the post-summer/Labor Day blues, we indulged in unlimited crab-smashing at the second annual Hammer & Claws All-You-Can-Eat Crab Feast.
Over the course of three days and four amazing sessions, over 40,000 blue crabs were transported over, courtesy of event producer and Maryland native Joshua Morgan, to be devoured by thousands of gluttonous New Yorkers at the Tunnel in West Chelsea. Lots of mallets were necessary in order to smash open those tasty suckers, as well as heaps of Old Bay seasoning.
In between smashings, everyone washed the crab down with Abita beer. How has no one ever told me about their amazing Purple Haze brew?! The slight, subtle hint of raspberry flavor is perfection. And in case you were sick of all that crab (in which case, why were you there?) there were also plenty of bags of Utz chips to go around, steamed corn, corn bread, coleslaw, potatoes, and other sides to nosh on.
Not all of these crabs gave their lives in vain. A portion of the proceeds from the Hammer & Claws Blue Crab Feast will be donated to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (www.cbf.org) to help the foundation in their continuing efforts of restoring and protecting the Chesapeake Bay.
