Domenico Vacca presented his Spring 2013 collection last night at his Fifth Avenue boutique to press as well as his very chic VIP clients. There was excitement in the air over the new line as guests milled about the two-story store nibbling on macarons and sipping on Champagne from Verve Clicquot and sparkling water from Pellegrino.
The Spring selection featured bright pastel hues from mint greens to cotton candy pinks in rich and luxurious linens and light wools just right for the warmer seasons. I asked the veteran craftsman about his choice of butter soft and lightweight fabrics for his collection. “Fabric needs to be touchable,” he responded. “You want somebody to touch it and say, ‘Wow this is great,’ instead of saying, ‘Whoa, what’s this?’”
On the first floor the designer entertained his jetsetting clientele, many of whom were there to be custom fitted for bespoke suits. He posed for pictures and talked of his clash with Hollywood royalty. Vacca designed the tuxedo that Best Actor winner Daniel Day Lewis wore to the Oscars this year. The back up suit that he created for the actor was on display for guests to marvel at, complete with Lewis’s initials stitched into the inside pocket.
So what did Vacca think when one of his most famous clients won an Academy Award dressed in his wares? “(Daniel’s) a great guy. He deserved it.”
