With its labyrinth of cobble stone streets, tantalizing visitors with tiny, romantic squares tucked around each corner, Avignon is a gem in the crown of France’s Provence region, and the opportunity to explore the magical city, even if just a day, is truly a gift. Famed for being an artistic epicenter in Provence, particularly the performing arts, there is a vibrant energy that permeates the ancient streets. Here the tradition of storytelling is immediately apparent, cascading from windowsills and wafting over the gregarious heads of locals having their afternoon pastis at ourdoor cafes.
Should good fortune afford you spending an extended interlude in the charming area, we recommend you cross the Rhone to the small, medieval village, Villeneuve-les-Avignon, where you will find the charming Le Preiure Hotel ready to welcome you.
On the grounds of a former convent, the uniquely designed space is luxuriously laid out, with abundent gardens enveloping guests in the rich colors and intoxicating fragrances that the continual Provencal sunshine yields. Arching walkways and inviting courtyards encourage guests to linger and relax in outdoor serenity. Even the lovely swimming pool blends into the gardens.
The modern rooms are luxuriously appointed with large bathrooms and separate soaking tubs as well as balconies or terraces for even more relishing of the fine weather and lush natural surroundings.
Guests should spend at least one day exploring the local village of Villeneuve-les-Avignon. Like a more intimate version of Avignon (less than three miles away), the walled town has a personality all its own as well as its own stoic castle, perched with a fantastic vantage for surveying the rolling landscape of Bouches du Rhone (where the Rhone river branches out in anticipation of meeting the sea).
After a day of exploring on foot, be sure to reserve a spot at the hotel’s on site Michelin Star Restaurant. Chef Fabien Fage changes menu constantly, taking cue from the bountiful local offerings of the season and showcasing the best cuisine of the region.
At night, the stars create their own glittering garden in the sky and the song of crickets fills the perfumed night air. The undeniable charm of Le Preiure and its uniquely luxurious surroundings will lull you into a happy dream even before you fall asleep.
