To ring in the holiday season, and to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of Prohibition, Socially Superlative joined the Village Voice at their Holiday Spirits Tasting Event at Studio Square in Astoria. Attendees walked through a winter wonderland of an entryway to Studio Square’s event space, where the soiree took up two floors and countless tables of different spirits.
On one floor of the party, guests were treated to the era-appropriate music stylings of the Blue Vipers of Brooklyn, a 5-piece jazz swing and blues band . On the other floor, DJ Tim Martell, famous for opening for Beyonce and Robin Thicke, offered up cross-genre mixes. Seamless and Whole Foods were also on hand for the occasion, offering delivery discounts and Root Liqueur Poached Pear Sundaes respectively.
Although all of the companies that were present had their own flare, there were some tables that stood out more than others. The extremely apropos Bootlegger Vodka from the Prohibition Distillery, based in Roscoe, NY, were mixing up lemonade and jam concoctions. What was interesting is the spirit is made of 100% American grain corn, so it is naturally gluten free!
The other vodka fan favorite, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, were also present, making the “Go To,” their take on lemonade.” This was complete with slapping a fresh piece of mint before handing it over.
No spirit tasting would be complete without bubbly and there were definitely choices. Barefoot Wine & Bubbly were offering up a tasting of their new flavored bubbly, Barefoot Bubbly Citrus, Berry, and Tropical Fusion. Ste. Michelle Wine Estates also had a great sparkling offering, including their Michelle Brute Rose.
The crowd favorite of the night was definitely the “Fat Apple” from Dutch’s Spirits. It combined hot mulled cider with Dutch’s Sugar Wash Moonshine, which was then topped with melted cinnamon brown sugar.
The event was everything you could hope to experience with a spirits tasting and definitely lived up to other Village Voice events. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next. In the meantime we’ll be putting their New York Happy Hours app to use!
