Health and Nutrition Showcase  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Smoothies and protein shakes were the toasting beverages of choice at last week’s
Editor Showcase spotlighting Health and Nutrition. 38 brands came together at the New York Marriott Marquis—some familiar (NOW Foods) and some a bit more surprising (ALDI grocery stores)—to showcase their take on healthy snacking and lifestyle.

A beautiful and colorful array of healthy treats greeted me upon arrival, and those smoothies certainly kept flowing as I meandered among the various display booths. It may seem that I reference smoothies quite a bit, but with good reason: yogurt brands Dannon and Alpina, as well as Lifeway Kefir, Jamba Juice At Home,” and AllWhites egg whites, all had blenders spinning to demonstrate their tasty (and healthy) drink recipes.

Many other brands offered samples such as nutrition barsveggie popsicles, or gluten-free brownies, but even more than my belly, my brain was also quite nourished at this event. Thanks to Eggland’s Best, I learned that uncooked farm fresh eggs will lie sideways in a cup of water, while an older egg will sit up vertically.

Though I’ve always adored avocados, I found one more reason to love them: learning that eating the creamy, green fruit will keep me satisfied much longer, and curb cravings better than almost any other food, thanks to the fine ladies at the Hass Avocado Board.

Perhaps the most useful tidbit of knowledge that I absorbed last week was not from a snack food company at all, but from Fellowes Air Purifiers. Apparently, Americans spend a shocking 90% of their time indoors, where the air is up to five times more polluted than it is outside. Though this fact is at first tough to swallow (especially for New Yorkers), there is some solace in the idea of state-of-the-art air purification technology that can surround us, keeping our interior environment clean as we snack thoughtfully, healthfully and with good conscience on the incredible array of options we are lucky to have available.
