For anyone looking for a nightlife option in Chicago, visitors or residents alike, ROOF on theWit, a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in the heart of Downtown Chicago, is a definite viable option.
Rated one of three top rooftop lounges in the world by Travel + Leisure, the space is situated on the 27th floor of the hotel. Once the elevator doors open, the magnitude of the space seems to come out of nowhere. A retractable roof that is invisible during perfect summer conditions completes the setup.
The main dance area looks like an underground dance club. On the specific night we visited, the lit runway was occupied by sailor dancers and a bear mascot. There was also a man I’d like to dub “the fun committee,” who could’ve also very well been the bear mascot too. He walked around in varied costumes using a leaf blower to send ROOF napkins in disarray from the raised DJ booth, sending the crowd below into a frenzy.
The lounge, which seems like a different venue entirely, has a bar with glowing surfaces and a television giving a glimpse of how the venue flourishes in the summer. The lush couches with the obligatory “reserved” signs, indicated table service is required. That being said, ROOF on theWit lacks the pretentious air of NYC clubs, which made it a welcome change.
We sat in a couple of chairs that lined the glowing runway, with a front row seat for the dancers who hit every beat of DJ Rock City’s mixes with ease, as the tremendous screen blazed to life behind them.
