Over 500 philanthropists came together for the Working Wonders signature fundraising event for Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

The A-list evening began with a VIP cocktail reception with delicious passed hors d’oeuvres and top shelf drinks before guests were ushered to take their seats for the first course and award presentation. Governor Deval Patrick was awarded the Ellen M. Zane Award for Visionary Leadership for his work expanding affordable health care insurance to over 98% of Massachusetts residents and leadership in improving community health.

The most touching part of the evening was when four-time cancer survivor and college student Allison Hawkes was presented the Cam Neely Award for Courage by none other than Cam Neely himself on behalf of the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care. Her story of perseverance, pluck, and courage in the face of unimaginable hardship was inspiring and brought many audience members to tears. Allison is clearly a remarkable young woman truly deserving of the award, and won over the hearts of everyone in the room. Her experience of being a longtime Tufts Medical Center patient helped set the stage for auctioneer Hank Morse of Country 102.5 WKLB-FM to open wallets to fund the hospitals special programs.

Famous northern Italian steakhouse, Davio’s designed the menu for the evening and was a major hit with their delicious warm spinach salad, hearty braised beef short ribs and delectable vanilla bean panna cotta dessert. Chef and CEO Steve DiFillippo, one of the event co-chairs along with BNY Mellon Regional Executive Joanne Y. Jaxtimer, spontaneously helped raise the stakes on the Davio’s auctioned dinner by promising bidders access to fancy wine pairings from his private collection.

The biggest and best surprise of the evening was when former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino (who is currently battling cancer) and Chinese New Year dragons presented defacto “Mayor of Chinatown” Frank Chin with the Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize his contribution to the Tufts Medical Center community by making a significant impact in Chinatown where the hospital resides.
