What a lunch! On April 28th, I attended the annual New York Bag Ladies Lupus Luncheon for the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation and as always the luncheon was fun and exciting.
This year they had changed up the silent auction portion. There were no longer hand written auction papers in front of each item but instead we were all handed our own mini ipad to make the bids. It was much easier to keep track of your bids should you have made more than one. A fun way to use technology and there were a lot of people helping out in case some needed help with the ipads. I had feared that the auction would be less interactive between people but to the contrary everyone was talking over the bags and showing off their bids on their iPads. It was fun!
The lunch portion of the event was fun. Tim Gunn is always entertaining and has witty speeches. It was a star-studded lunch with Jessye Norman who introduced Tim Gunn who not only introduced the three Honorees Lisa R. Sammaritano, MD, Michelle Gadsen-Williams and Desiree Gruber but also Desiree’s husband Kyle MacLachlan.
Besides the introductions by Tim Gunn you would have had the chance to meet Former First Lady of New York State Matilda Raffa Cuomo, fashion luminaries such as Anne Keating, Danielle DiFernando and Mary Belle. And you cannot have a luncheon with noted philanthropists and socialites such as Phyllis Mack and Lady Va Maughan.
When Michelle Gadsden-Williams took the stage people gave her great applause but by the time she finished her speech she received a standing ovation; for her honesty, her bravery and her story. She is very inspirational and she is someone, who we could all look up to. She made the event very emotional and her speech it home.
This is an iconic luncheon that I encourage young women to attend at least once in their lifetime.
