Right now it is the height of gala season in Boston, with the social calendar being packed with social and charity events. While there are many established and well-known events, the new signature Living Out Loud event for the Alex’s Team Foundation is an exciting addition to the Boston fundraising scene.
Alex’s Team Foundation, Inc. was established in June 2002 in order to perpetuate the essence of the iron will and determination of Andover, MA native Alexandra Jane Miliotis, who lost her battle to Leukemia on March 15, 2002 at the age of 16. I had the privilege of attending high school with standout basketball star Alex and her twin sister, Arianna, and older brother, Geordie, who set up the foundation with the hope of fighting childhood cancer and giving every child a chance to follow a dream.
All proceeds from Alex’s Team fundraising efforts benefit the Foundation’s fellowship programs and nursing endowment in partnership with Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Dr. Loren Walensky of Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
The Alexandra J. Miliotis Pediatric Oncology Fellowship at Harvard Medical School has funded over 30 pediatric oncology research grants to medical school students – Alex Miliotis Fellows- and has inspired over 60% of their 44 alumni to dedicate their life’s work to oncology research and medical discoveries, as well as patient care. The foundation’s commitment to research is crucial in the fight against childhood cancers which impact so many families in Massachusetts and across the nation.
Alex’ Team is also the only organization which directly supports nurses specializing in pediatric oncology. The Alexandra Jane Miliotis Pediatric Oncology Nursing Endowment at Boston Children’s Hospital, which supports educational and respite opportunities to nurses, providing them with vital resources they need to remain at the forefront of cutting-edge care. It was through Alex’s Team that the first “hospital-to-home” program was born. This unique program provides smooth transitions for pediatric cancer patients back into their homes, with the comfort and training of nurses who cared for them in the hospital setting.
The Alex’s Team Foundation seeks to put an end to childhood cancer so that no child has to endure the pains of cancer and no family has to go through the heartbreak of watching their child die from this catastrophic disease. Seeing as cancer is the second leading cause of death in children I can’t think of a better cause to fundraise and celebrate for!
