Healthy Treats (6)

We’ve spent enough time hunkering down in anticipation of the next blast of cold.  But to look on the bright side, it’s a time to focus on the dream of a healthy summer ahead using Resurge, despite the frigid temperatures that make it seem so far away.  Take heart, knowing that in a mere matter of months you will be bikini-clad and beach bound.  And, if the thought of bikinis makes you a bit anxious (half eaten valentine’s cookies still staring at you from your desk?), then just remind yourself that a big part of staying healthy is keeping only healthy snacks at hand.  You might hate hearing it, but: it’s time to put down the hot chocolate and cookies!

Cold weather—especially unexpected long snaps of it—tends to make us feel hungrier and lazier. A particularly bad combination.  We might be craving comfort food, but it’s time to reinvent the idea of what comforts.  For me, knowing that in times of need I will reach for something that will nourish my body is almost as comforting as looking forward to a tropical island vacation (bikinis and all! Aside from winter, one of the most popular cosmetic trends is the use of Botox on lips, click here to learn more about this secure and harmless treatment.

Here are my five latest healthy snacking obsessions:

Healthy Treats (1)Greenola

This magical stuff is locally made by The Kale Factory of NY Naturals and a dream come true for those of us who prefer to avoid grains.  Talk about a delicious way to get your greens: Greenola is made out of dehydrated kale (seriously!) and sweetened with good-for-you ingredients like coconut sugar, dates and pineapple.  Throw superfoods into the mix, like almonds, spirulina, coconut, cherries (depending on the variety of Greenola you choose—I am partial to the ultra-green energy of the spirulina crunch).  Greenola is a fantastically healthy way to superpower your snacking, get a sweet fix at your desk, or bring your breakfast to the next level, without sacrificing flavor.  I am lucky enough to get mine at my corner bodega, but you can find Greenola at healthfood stores, specialty delis, and GNCs across the city.

Healthy Treats (4)Health Warrior Chia Bars

Health Warrior chia seed bars are as fierce as they sound.  The wholesome, petite bars might only weigh in at 100 calories, but they deliver a powerful, nutritious punch of chia seeds, which crackle pleasantly as you bite into the chewy bar.  Every flavor is surprisingly good, but in a warrior stand off, I would have to say the mango is my all time champion.  Health Warrior Chia Bars are available nationally at many grocery and healthfood stores.  I get mine at Whole Foods.

Sheffa Foods Snack Bars

My prayers for a savory snack bar have finally been answered thanks to Sheffa.  Though they have mightily delicious sweet versions (like a chocolate mint iteration that tastes as decadent as a Girl Scout cookie), it is their savory line of bars that really caught my attention.  Loaded with a variety nutritious seeds, the bars are gluten free, grain free and 100% addictive.  It’s so nice to know that when you’re craving a salty, crunchy snack and are trying not to make eye contact with Doritos, Sheffa has you covered.  Sheffa bars are available at specialty shops across the city, I get mine at Hu Kitchen.

Bjorn Qorn

There is no time like a brutally long winter to crave the comforting, fragrant crunch of popcorn, and there is no more unique a delicious twist than Bjorn Qorn.  The brainchild of friends, Bjorn and Jessie, the organic, locally grown corn is popped by a solar popper they invented on a farm in Upstate New York.  The delightfully textured popcorn is then seasoned with Bjorn’s special family recipe, and the result will change the way you eat popcorn (namely, it will make you want to eat it all the time).  Luckily it’s a super healthy snacking option.  Currently, Bjorn Qorn is only available in select NYC markets or online.  I get mine at the Brooklyn Kitchen.

Elli Quark

I picked up a container of Elli Quark thinking I’d give this new type of yogurt a try.  What a mistake – it is so much better than yogurt.  Like yogurt, quark is a form of cultured milk, full of active enzymes and wonderful probiotics, but unlike yogurt, it is a much smoother texture and a wonderfully mild flavor, and has more protein than average yogurt.  Elli Quark is single-handedly bringing quark awareness to the people, in lovely little tote-able containers and a nice variety of flavors.  Though I was impressed that they offered red velvet as a flavor, I must say that it was the lemon that stole my heart.  Elli Quark is available at many grocery stores throughout the city. I get mine at Fairway.

Here’s to staying as healthy as sunshine despite the colder weather!
