As if to answer our winter prayers, Ryan McKenzie, of creative agency Simmer, brought us Patent Pending, a cozy speakeasy hideaway behind Patent Coffee in Flatiron. Once a Nikola Tesla lab, the space screams history.
When you enter the venue behind the Patent Coffee menu, you feel like you’re transported into a scene from the Prestige. Stylized lights hang dimly around the bar area as cocktails are expertly crafted by bartenders in attire to match the décor. The menu that looks more like a scientific manual than a cocktail and bar bites list and are just as intriguing to read about.
The drinks are the creations of Harrison Ginsberg and Nick Rolin of Dead Rabbit and BlackTail fame and it is easy to tell with how epic the cocktails are. 6 of the 12 concoctions were available for the tasting on this under the radar opening night and they did not disappoint. Drinks were categorized with Tesla themes in mind; Energy, Frequency, Vibration and Descent.
I personally tried the “Light Me Up,” which had a nice balance of sweet and savory from the mango black tea and Szechuan peppercorn. The Current and Coils was also memorable, like a tall fruity coffee-forward milkshake. The team also offered up the Bacon Grilled Cheese and Fried Chicken Sandwich with buffalo ranch as a sneak peek of the bar bites menu.
I can’t wait to come back to try the rest of the menu. The spot is perfect for a secluded date or for a meetup with friends that really appreciate the NYC cocktail scene. What’s good is that you can book a reservation for the lush banquettes via Resy on the website to guarantee entry, although seats at the bar are first come first serve. Happy Speakeasying!
