If you were just walking down Mott street, you may miss the neon directional sign for under-the radar speakeasy, Basement, a carnival-themed cocktail bar with a Portuguese tapas menu to accompany it. The entrance may confuse you (we’re not here to spoil the surprise), but we’re here to make sure you don’t miss it the next time you’re in the neighborhood or in the mood to uncover a hidden gem in the city.
Once you do find yourself inside the Basement, you’ll see you’re in Instagram heaven. Photo ops adorn most walls and if you want to have a nod to your college days, there are two lit up beer pong tables. We came on a weekday, which we heard was more of a low key vibe, but the spot turns up on weekends.
For a place this kitschy, they do actually have a very strong cocktail menu, which was concocted by Mixologist, Dennis Condon. There are also seasonal ones that keep you guessing on the menu. They also have Barrel-Aged Cocktails – aged in-house for 4-6 weeks, in. All are well balanced and cater to whatever your party may be craving.
We feasted on menu items like potatas bravas with a fried egg, plaintain chips served out of a popcorn container, sliders, empanadas and fried calamari, among other items.
The spot is an expected delight that is great for happy hour, a date, or drinks with coworkers. We’re definitely bringing our out of town friends here the next time they’re in town!
