What does it take to run a successful eatery in this concrete jungle we call home? NYC has more flavor and culinary diversity than you’ll find just about anywhere else. With so many options available, how do you choose where to fill your belly? As a native born New Yorker I’ve seen restaurants come and go and trends fade and die away. One things for certain though, Friendly Jerry’s is here to stay!
Located in Hell’s Kitchen, just 15 minutes walk from Times Square, Friendly Jerry’s is my favorite place to chow, and I’ll tell you why. First off: the food is fresh and made to order right in front of you on the grill. What kinda food do they serve? They started out as a simple hot dog place, but there’s nothing simple about their dogs. For the carnivore they serve tasty beef Sabretts, which, in my humble opinion, are the best franks in New York.
If you’re a vegetarian or even a vegan, don’t fret, as they have vegan dogs too! I tried their Beyond Dog, which is 100% vegan made from plant-based Beyond Meat. Hard to tell the difference, folks. They also have soy-made Smart Dogs from Lightlife, which are equally delicious. Don’t like carbs? Order their Keto Dog, a bunless wiener served with chili shredded chicken, and three cheeses. Whatever your flavor, they are all winners!
Hot dogs aren’t the only thing grilling at Friendly Jerry’s. They’ve got the best wings in Hell’s Kitchen, perfect for your Super Bowl LIV party this coming Sunday (go Chiefs!). Also on the menu are homemade empanadas (choose from chicken, chicken & cheese, beef, beef & cheese, pizza), chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, and chicken sliders, among other yummy treats.
My personal favorite from the menu though is Jerry’s Sirloin Rice Bowl. He makes mine with dirty Cajun rice and makes it spicy, which I highly recommend. Made to order with whatever additions you want (get grilled peppers and onions), this is my go-to late night meal. Oh, and did I mention they’re open till 2:00 AM on weeknights and 4:00 AM on weekends? There’s no better place to go in Hell’s Kitchen late night to get your grub on.
But it’s not just about the food at Friendly Jerry’s. It’s about the service. Jerry treats every customer with a smile and makes them feel special. Granted, I live next door to his restaurant and see him all the time, but most of his customers are regulars. He gets to know you and you feel welcomed when you you walk through the door. You don’t get that at most other places in this fast-paced city. Jerry and his partner Massiel live up to their name. Their goal is to offer affordable fresh comfort food in a friendly environment and they’re great at it.
Jerry also told me that they’ll soon be offering breakfast options in the morning including made-to-order omelets which I’m pretty stoked about. Most options on their menu are just $6 or under. You can’t beat that. They have weekly specials and cater too so if you’re hosting a party and need to feed your friends look no further.
Opened in July 2018 with less than 2 years under their belt, Friendly Jerry’s is the best addition to Hell’s Kitchen in a long time. Come check them out if you haven’t already and tell Jerry that the Grindmaster sent you!
