On Saturday, February 22, 2020 over two hundred patrons of the opera came together for the annual Boston Lyric Opera Gala at The State Room.
This year’s stunningly produced event celebrating Stanford Calderwood General & Artistic Direct Esther Nelson’s tenth season with the BLO featured stunning live opera performances embedded throughout the evening. Emmy award winning arts and entertainment critic for CBS-Boston, Joyce Kulhawik, served as Master of Ceremonies and welcomed guests along with BLO Musical Director David Angus.
Philanthropists rubbed elbows with a variety of young sopranos, altos, basses, and tenors of The Jane and Steven Akin Emerging Artist program strategically seated at each table while enjoying a sumptuous three course meal, open bar, and table wine service. The Emerging Artists gave incredible surprise performances throughout the evening, along with the BLO Orchestra and Chorus, in addition to a preview of the much-lauded upcoming show, Norma.
Over $850,000 was raised throughout the evening to help keep the BLO’s operatic programming alive and well throughout venues in Boston, and working towards their eventual goal of a more permanent home.
I don’t usually play favorites with my charity events, but the BLO Gala has been the highlight of the 2020 winter season for its innovation in combining art and charity, making for a fun evening that was anything but stuffy and certainly a refreshing departure from the norm.
