Last week my husband and I were invited to Bornholm, a new Danish restaurant and beer garden in Brooklyn. It was so strange walking in as it was like walking into a different world and I was instantly home. I loved it!

Bornholm is an island south of Sweden but it belongs to Denmark and the owners are from there. Everything is Danish, from the décor to the food and everything in between. The staff is very engaged with the customers and are truly trying to pronounce the very difficult Danish names. If you are a customer, do not feel silly trying to pronounce it and have fun with it! No one will know you are pronouncing it incorrectly, except for those few who grew up in Denmark.

They play Danish music and I loved how I could literally sing along to every single song that was playing. Don’t worry, not all of the music is in Danish, but you might not recognize it.

I was invited partly because I am Danish, but also because they are celebrating the opening of their new beer garden. They will have a wide selection of beers, and you should try the Danish beers if you like to try new beers or are a beer connoisseur. Denmark is starting to spit out some pretty amazing beer, so you should stop by to try something you would not normally get in New York.

If you are interested in stopping by for dinner, I recommend their own curated salmon and pickled herring. It is rare that you can find it done so perfectly, so kudos to the chef! If they have the “Stjerneskud” (which translates to “Shooting Star”) on the menu, grab it. It is a seafoodgasm. One thing Danes do really well is seafood. The “Torsk” (which translates to “cod”) is the best thing on the menu and the skin was crisped to perfection.

Should you be in the mood to stop by their beer garden on Friday, they have amazing offers. A beer flight for $13 with a selection of 3 beers. These are high-end, rare beers so the price is amazing and perfect for the summer. The beer selection will vary depending on inventory but if you happen to get there when they have their Evil Twin Falco IPA, I highly recommend it. Evil Twin is made by a Dane in Brooklyn, so what more fitting than to partner up with Bornholm?

As most Danes understand, if you are drinking beer you need to also eat food, it helps on not getting too drunk and the hangovers the next day, so try out their homemade potato salad or the classic Danish sausage “Medister”, which is a spiced sausage with a burst of flavor.

You will definitely see me visit a few times over the summer. Their outdoor area is great for a warm summer evening and a beer garden. See you there!
