Tasting Brooklyn is one of our favorite food events to attend because it gives us insight on Brooklyn restaurants that we might not have otherwise stumbled upon.
Social Fix (formally Brooklyn Exposed) hosted the 4th annual event in the historical Green Building in Carroll Gardens. Local food vendors lined the walls, joined with local beer, wine and spirit vendors.
Upon walking in, Fairway Market was the first vendor and their traditional preparation of a Lobster Roll had everyone coming back for seconds and thirds because of the freshness and simplicity of the dish. Luke’s Lobster, a vendor we always look for at these events, served up Shrimp Rolls in perfectly toasted buns.
There was lots of great barbecue to be had. Famous BBQ joint, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que was on hand to promote their newest Brooklyn outpost. Benchmark Restaurant prepared Cherrywood Smoked Baby Back Ribs and the meat fell right off the bone. Tasting Brooklyn staple, Kiwiana, showcased their unique Manuka and Marmite Braised Baby Back Ribs, which was also a highlight of the night.
Mexican/Spanish-style restaurants were also popular. Palo Santo had a beautiful presentation and made each taco fresh. Zona Rosa’s Tacos de Carnitas were so authentic they included a secret family recipe. El Born had multiple tapas-style dishes that reminded me of my trip to Madrid.
Our favorite dish of the night, hands down, was Tutu’s Short Rib Gnocchi Hash. The samples kept running out, but the restaurant’s team churning out fresh batches to keep up with the demand. Treats from Robicellis, Baked and Cacao Prieto were just icing on the event.
A Tasting Brooklyn favorite, Brooklyn Oenology was on hand to showcase more bottles with the peel-able art labels and to introduce apropos wine selections like Shindig White and Social White. White Pike sampled their whiskey that is smooth enough for even the most novice spirit drinkers. Huckleberry Bar poured Jack Sparrow’s, which was one of our favorite cocktails of the night and Lavender Lake’s River’s Edge was an unique cocktail worth taking the trip to BK for.
We left the event with full stomachs and promises to return to visit our faves of the night. We will definitely be back to explore Brooklyn for another taste!
