Get Your Appetite Ready: 5 Boro Pizza Challenge Returns to NYC on Sept. 22nd!

On Saturday, September 22, New Yorkers will test their ability to navigate the city and eat the city’s best slices— for a good cause.

The 5 Boro Pizza Challenge is returning to New York City on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Over 200 of the city’s most die-hard pizza enthusiasts will race throughout the city to eat five of the city’s best slices—one in each borough. The 5 Boro Pizza Challenge is NYC’s ultimate test of gastrointestinal fortitude, subway savvy, and Instagram prowess—and all for a good cause.

The event kicks off at the Red Cube (140 Broadway in lower Manhattan). At 11 a.m. sharp, teams will receive a list of designated pizzerias—one in each borough. Participants will plot their course and travel to each location, eat a slice, and document it on Instagram with the hashtag #5boropizzachallenge before crossing the finish line at the after party at Amity Hall in Greenwich Village. The first person or team to complete the challenge will be named the 2018 5 Boro Pizza Challenge Champion.

The $30 registration fee includes official entry into the 5 Boro Pizza Challenge, as well as a t-shirt and finisher’s medal. Participants cover the cost of pizza and transportation.

Proceeds from the 5 Boro Pizza Challenge benefit Transportation Alternatives, New York City’s leading advocate for walking, biking and public transportation, so participants will have to travel the way most New Yorkers do: trains, buses, ferries, bikes and their own two feet. Driving or hailing a taxi, Uber, Lyft, Via or any other for-hire vehicle are forbidden.

The five pizza establishments that participants will travel to are carefully scouted by organizers. Only shops that serve by the slice are eligible, and only one shop is selected in each borough. Past locations have included well-known shops, such as Joe’s in Manhattan, as well as buzzy newcomers to the slice scene, such as Best Pizza in Brooklyn. The five selected pizzerias will be revealed to participants at 11 a.m. sharp on the morning of the 5 Boro Pizza Challenge.

In past years, most participants relied on subways and ferries to complete the challenge, while a handful of teams biked for all or most of the journey. In 2017, a team of elite runners completed the challenge on foot, running to all five pizzerias (and using the Staten Island Ferry).

The 5 Boro Pizza Challenge is organized by Joe Cutrufo and Shannon Moriarty, who live in Washington Heights with their two small children. The concept was conceived in 2013 as an entertaining way to explore the city with friends, and opened to the public as a fundraiser in 2016. Roughly 75 people took the Challenge in its inaugural year, and it more than doubled in size in 2017, with 160 participants.
