Italian cuisine has developed through centuries of social and political changes, with roots as far back as the 4th century. In the mood for delicious and authentic Italian food, my partner and I decided to visit Mozzarella & Vino to check out their menu and we really liked what we saw.

Naples Italy born owner Gianfranco Sorrentino and his wife Paula BollaSorrentino know a thing or two about Italian food after being in the restaurant biz for over 30 years, from London to Tokyo to NYC with many places in between.

We started out with some red wine which was recommended to us by our very friendly server. I chose the Nebbiolo delle Langhe (2014) and my girlfriend tried the Barbaresco Riserva (2010). I’m no wine connoisseur, but both were excellent.  They have a diverse wine list which even the most serious sommelier would appreciate.

To start we ordered Calamari Fritti with spicy tomato sauce and their signature Mozzarella served with cherry tomatoes and grilled eggplant salad. As you would expect from their restaurants name, the mozzarella was simply amazing, worthy of the Godfather Vito Corleone himself. I don’t think I’ve ever had nor ever will have a fresher and tastier mozzarella. Gianfranco has it flown in twice a week from Italy.

Their Polpette di Carne homemade meatballs were also recommended to us, and yes, they were delicious. I challenge you to find a better meatball anywhere in the city.

For our main courses we chose the oven baked Lasagna al Forno and Sautéed Scottish Salmon. Both equally delicious, my girlfriend and I were in culinary heaven.  The salmon was cooked just right and so fresh it literally jumped on the plate. Like a good book it was so good that it was sad to finish it.

We ended our meal with a tiramisu style Torta de Mascarpone and the Dark Chocolate and Almond Cake with pistachio gelato. Both were winners but my favorite was the torta. Oh my, get the torta!

Mozzarella & Vino is a really excellent restaurant located across the street from MoMA on west 54th Street. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience there and you will too!
