Any business or brand that can celebrate an anniversary, let alone has been around for four years, has got to be doing something right. In the case of The Mixtape Comedy Show, a monthly comedy showcase, which takes place every third Sunday of the month at New York’s Gotham Comedy Club, hosted by Anthony Anderson and Royale Watkins, one should just look to its fan base and online social following and they will understand.
We had the chance to attend and celebrate The Mixtape Comedy Show’s 4th Anniversary on Sunday, January 20th. Before the show, we caught up with the host, Comedian/writer Royale Watkins. While talking with Mr. Watkins, we discussed the show’s history, as well as his long performance career, to where he is now and the shift he’s made into becoming a producer.
“The show is so interactive because it combines comedy and music,” Mr.Watkins said. He believes that the Mixtape Comedy Show not only serves as a comedy show, but a place where fans come to find peace through laughter. “The show is more like a ‘church of comedy!’”
Mr. Watkins explained that although seasoned comedians like Sherri Shepherd and Chris Rock, who later took the stage, are known to perform, along with future stars in the industry, his show is still unique. After attending the show, we definitely understand what he meant. The show is a blend of comedy and music, which includes something called The “Mixtape Freestyle Challenge”. The freestyle challenge provides hip-hop hopefuls with the opportunity to compete in a rap battle and show off their rhyming skills.
Over the past four years, the show has gained much of its loyal fan base over social media, even reaching audiences internationally. The show streams live on its Facebook page and off Ustream. Mr. Watkins is proud of their ability to deliver The Mixtape Comedy Show’s content, and hopes to find additional ways to reach more fans in the future.
Other performers who made the night memorable included Nick Griffin, Hadiyah Robinson, and Wil Sylvince.
